I was once told a story about a conversation between
a successful auto salesman and a rookie. After observing the
experienced salesman close a deal on a new car, the rookie asked
why the pro kept treating the customer like a long lost friend.
After all, he had already sold the car. The experienced salesman
said, "I'm in this business for the long haul. You can
treat a customer who buys a car from you like a $25,000 customer.
Over the long haul however, that customer may purchase eight
or more cars over their lifetime. I want that customer to buy
them all from me. That makes them a $200,000 customer, not a
$25,000 one."
