Developing Your Networking Skills
Nothing can be so helpful, or so hurtful to your business, as the power of networking. Making (and keeping) the right contacts can increase sales potential, your knowledge of the trade, and your professional image.
I personally, have benefited greatly by networking within the painting community. By sharing and discussing problems and successes with other decorative artists, I have learned much about running my business, how to price my work, and technique skills. By expanding my circle of contacts to the painting contractors, I have again, learned much about running a professional business, learned even more painting tips, and made great friends in the industry. All this has opened doors for my professional career that would have remained unlocked, if I wouldn't have taken the time to invest in networking.
One of my favorite business authors and motivational speakers, Jim Rohn, has a section in his book, "Leading an Inspired Life" on developing your networking skills. The six techniques he discusses are:
1. A networking relationship must be mutually beneficial. Favors are expected to be returned someday. If you are giving out much more then you are receiving, it may be time to look for a new network.
2. Keep the relationship active. Don't just call when you need something. Attend meetings, lunches, functions, and stay in touch.
3. Express your gratitude and appreciate Sending notes, flowers, or some other kindness can make you unforgettable in this busy world!
4. Keep the professional relationship professional. Don't be afraid to walk away from something that appears harmful.
5. Remember the other persons need for achievement. If you are further in your career status then another, be a mentor, and give your time to someone in the way of advice and sharing stories. Your extra effort may be just what they need to keep going.
6. Competition is good! When it is used positively, it is a benchmark by which you can measure your productivity.
Networking is a great way to increase your opportunities. You have no idea what may lie ahead for you, but you will never find out if you don't do it!
